Purpose:

The purpose of this scope of work is to outline duties, deliverables, and timeframe for developing pesticide user modules.

Background:

The American University of the Caribbean (AUC) (originally the American University of Les Cayes) in Les Cayes, Haiti, was founded and incorporated in 1983 as a not-for-profit institution. The University has three colleges: The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, the College of Business Management and Administration and the College of Engineering that offer bachelor’s degrees. There is also a Continuing Education Program that offers certificate programs in Accounting, Spanish, Computer Science, and English.

In the last ten years, the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences has been actively involved in collaborative research, involving various local and international partners. This scope of work is developed within the framework of the Haiti Agricultural University Partnership (HAUP): Center for Mitigation, Adaptation, and Resilience to Climate-Change in Haiti (CEMARCH), a Feed the Future/USAID funded program implemented by Kansas State University (KSU) in partnership with six Haitian Universities, including AUC. The overarching objective of the HAUP-CEMARCH is to build institutional and human capacity in Haitian agriculture to advance agriculture-led inclusive economic growth.

By the end of CEMARCH Haitian researchers and institutions will have improved their research and extension agenda, and developed and implemented targeted research programs and curricula that benefit Haitian growers and citizens. Developing a training program on Safe Use of Pesticides is one of AUC’s strategic initiatives to achieve that goal.

General Objective: To develop Pesticide User Training Modules to address issues with pesticide use in Haiti.

Specific Objectives:

  • Design training curriculum for Safe Use of Pesticides
  • Develop course contents for synchronous and asynchronous online delivery
  • Deliver online classes for students, agricultural extension professionals, and pesticide handlers/users
  • Support the AUC Faculty to use the course contents to deliver presential training

Deliverables

  • Training curriculum designed by February 29, 2023
  • Training modules developed by April 30, 2024. Course contents include principles of pest management, pesticide regulations, pesticide formulation, pesticide labeling, pesticides in the environment, pesticides and human health, safe pesticide handling, personal protective equipment, pesticide application procedures, application equipment and calibration, emergency response.
  • Deliver three online course by September 30, 2024

Qualifications

  • PhD or MS degree in Entomology, Plant Protection, or related field
  • Past teaching experience
  • Fluent in Haitian Creole, French, and English
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
